ISO 9001:2026 has been officially published.

After a multi-year revision process – the Draft International Standard in August 2025, the Final Draft in early 2026 – the updated quality management systems standard is now live. A three-year transition period runs until September 2029. After that date, all ISO 9001 certificates must be held against the 2026 version.

What changed in ISO 9001:2026

The 2026 revision builds on the 2015 version. The core structure remains intact: the same ten-clause Annex SL framework, the same Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, the same process approach. Organisations that have invested in well-designed quality management systems will not be starting again.

The changes are targeted, but they are meaningful. Here is what the revision addresses.

Climate change is now formally in scope. Following ISO Amendment 1:2024, organisations must determine whether climate change is a relevant issue to their QMS under Clause 4.1. This is not optional. If your context analysis does not already include a documented assessment of climate relevance, that gap needs to be closed now – not at your next recertification audit.

Leadership expectations have expanded. The role of top management under Clause 5 goes further than 2015. Leaders are now expected to actively foster a quality culture built on integrity and ethical conduct – not just support the QMS in principle. This shifts quality from a compliance function to a demonstrated leadership responsibility.

Digital and AI readiness is addressed. The 2026 revision provides clearer guidance on documented information in digital environments and begins to address the use of artificial intelligence in quality processes. If your organisation uses AI for inspections, predictive quality, or automated decision-making, the standard now expects a higher level of oversight and validation.

Risk and opportunity management is more precise. Clause 6.1 now distinguishes more clearly between managing risks and pursuing opportunities. The intent is to move organisations from purely defensive risk thinking toward proactive, strategic planning.

A new Annex A provides clause-by-clause guidance. Annex A is not a normative requirement – your certification body cannot raise a nonconformity based on it alone – but it will shape how auditors approach the new version in practice. Reading it is worthwhile for anyone preparing for a surveillance or recertification audit under the 2026 standard.

Who should do the transition course

If you are an ISO 9001 auditor – internal or external – you need to understand the updated requirements before you audit against them. The QM26 Transition competency unit is the recognised way to demonstrate that you have done so. Completing the course means you are audit-ready for the 2026 standard.

If you manage or implement a QMS – as a quality manager, coordinator, or management representative – understanding the changes helps you identify what your system needs to address before your next audit. The course gives you a clear, practical picture of where the gaps are likely to be.

If you already hold the Exemplar Global QM competency unit from an ISO 9001 course, the QM26 Transition unit extends that credential to the current version of the standard. The transition timeline

The three-year transition period is longer than it feels. Here is what to expect:

• Now (September 2026): ISO 9001:2026 is published. Certification bodies begin training their auditors on the updated standard. New certificates and recertifications will progressively move to the 2026 version.
• 2027–2028: Most organisations will encounter the new version for the first time at a surveillance or recertification audit. Certification bodies will confirm their own transition timelines – check with yours directly.
• September 2029: The transition deadline. All ISO 9001 certificates must be held against the 2026 version. ISO 9001:2015 is retired.

Three years sounds like a long time. In practice, most organisations have two or three certification audit cycles between now and the deadline. Getting across the changes now means you are not scrambling at recertification.
